Learning Life Through Chess
I've been thinking this week about how learning about life through chess. While I know you can learn about life through many sports and activities, chess seems to have some very important lessons. Primarily this past week, I have been realizing the importance of patience and consistency. My chess play has focused on playing a sound, patient and consistent game. I have opened carefully and waited for opportunities to make a small improvement in my position. Once attained. I concentrate on keeping that advantage through patience, and consistency until the next opportunity comes along. In chess, the other side has to move. They don't have a choice. So there will always be an opportunity, if you wait long enough and keep your game strong enough in the mean time.
An interesting article I found discusses Teaching Life Skills Through Chess to children.
Here is another interesting story about the chess team from a school in Harlem.
Therefore, I will be teaching my son to play chess, and I might even get one of these Giant Chess Sets to make it more fun.
